Understanding the Season Rating
The Season Rating is a broad indicator that allows for a quick assessment of a sleeping pad's thermal performance. Many types of outdoor gear — including tents, sleeping bags, and camping sleeping pads — provide a recommended season of use, commonly referred to as the Season Rating, making product selection straightforward for consumers.
However, there are multiple ways to define seasons, so which approach should we use? As an outdoor equipment brand, we naturally prioritize temperature as the primary basis for seasonal classification, while also accounting for terrain, wind speed, humidity, and other specific environmental and individual physiological factors during actual use.
According to the climatological definition, seasons are determined by the five-day sliding mean temperature: when the five-day sliding mean is at or above 10°C but below 22°C, it is spring; when it reaches or exceeds 22°C, summer begins from the first day of that period; when it drops back below 22°C, autumn begins; and when it falls below 10°C, winter begins — and so the cycle continues.
How to Use the Season Rating
When camping outdoors, use the Season Rating as your starting point: choose a 1-season sleeping pad for summer, a 3-season pad for spring and autumn, a 4-season pad for winter, and a 4-season+ pad for extreme cold conditions. Pair it with an appropriate sleeping bag, tent, and clothing to achieve the best overall thermal performance.
