Experienced backpackers are familiar with sleeping bag temperature ratings — a clear indicator of the temperature range in which a sleeping bag is designed to perform, allowing users to choose the right product for their conditions. For camping sleeping pads, however, the key metric is the R-value, determined in accordance with the ASTM F3340 standard. While some pads do include a recommended temperature range or seasonal rating, we believe these figures are not entirely accurate. Here's why.
Sleeping Bag Temperature Ratings
In most scenarios, a sleeping pad and a sleeping bag are used together — much like a mattress and a blanket. The European testing standard for sleeping bag temperature ratings, EN 23537, evaluates the comfort level and physiological response of male and female subjects inside a sleeping bag at various constant temperatures. The variable being tested is essentially the ambient air temperature: how cold can the air get while the sleeper still remains comfortable throughout the night?
Sleeping Pads and Temperature
For sleeping pads, the relevant variable should be ground surface temperature. However, ground temperature is typically lower than air temperature, and the human body perceives different ground surfaces in different ways. A sleeping pad functions as a barrier between the sleeper and the ground, preventing the ground from drawing heat away from the body. For this reason, it is not possible to assign a sleeping pad the same kind of temperature-based usage standard that applies to sleeping bags. Investigating the relationship between sleeping pad performance and both ground and air temperature is an area of ongoing research at Shanzhiquan, and we hope to share our findings with the community soon.
For casual recreational camping, comfort is the top priority, since conditions are generally mild. But for mountaineers, athletes, adventure trekkers, and outdoor climbers, the quality of a night's sleep can be critical. That is why Shanzhiquan maintains a rigorous approach to testing and development — so that outdoor enthusiasts can rest easy and sleep soundly on every night in the wild, waking up refreshed and ready to greet the next day's sunrise and the journey ahead.
