2003

Mr. Cao, one of the founders of Mountain Spring, is carrying a hiking backpack and wearing a green jacket. He stands on a ladder that leans against a near-vertical rock face.

During the SARS outbreak, life came to a sudden pause. In that stillness, I began reflecting on deeper questions — about life, purpose, and meaning.

Seeking clarity, I wandered into the hills of Badachu on the outskirts of Beijing. Surrounded by wildflowers, drifting clouds, and the quiet sound of mountain springs, I found a sense of calm I hadn’t felt before. In nature, everything became simple again.

As I spent more time outdoors, one challenge stood out — the cold, damp ground. Using a simple foam mat as a temporary solution sparked an idea:

why not create something that brings real comfort to outdoor living?

That moment marked the beginning of Mountain Spring — a brand inspired by nature, dedicated to helping people rest comfortably in the wild, while staying connected to the mountains and the springs.

Over the past 22 years, Mountain Spring has been devoted to advancing the science of outdoor sleep systems. Thermal performance is not simply a matter of a pad's R-value — it is a systemic challenge involving pressure distribution, moisture management, sleeping bag underside interaction, and the surface characteristics of the pad itself. Developing sleep system gear that is insulating, comfortable, safe, and ultralight remains the unwavering mission of Mountain Spring.
